Summer Marching Band Prep - PLEASE READ!!!
To aide in each student's success in the Summer Marching Band rehearsals, students must start a physical training regimen to endure the hot summer weather.  Students have been advised to get out of the house and become physically active.  This does not mean they need to run a mile with a 50 pound backpack, but this does mean they need to get out of the air conditioned house, take a walk, play a pick-up game of whiffle-ball, sport, swim, etc.  This will not only acclimate them to the heat and humidity, but also build their physical stamina to endure the weather conditions.  PLEASE, encourage your child to be active in the months leading up to the July/August rehearsals.

In addition, please begin to organize the items they will need.  A cross-trainer type of tennis shoe.  Sandals, slip on shoes, Converse Chuck Taylor's, or a shoe that CANNOT be tied or lack a good arch are NOT appropriate shoe for marching band.  Also, we also encourage students to bring a 1 gallon water jug with their name located on the jug to be brought to every rehearsal.  Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen for both their lips and body are extremely important for these rehearsals as well.  Students should find a back-pack, drawstring bag, to store all of this "stuff" to make it easier to organize their "field bag" for the marching band season.

Diet and hydration is also an important part of being successful in the summer months.  Student should prepare two days in advance in hydrating for marching band rehearsals.  Stay away from pop and carbonated beverages.  Students are also reminded to eat a healthy meal before rehearsals.  Breakfast is important during Home Band Camp.

These little things will go a long way in order for everyone to have a successful summer marching band season.

UNIFORMS
Attention Band Members:

We will be trying on, fitting and altering uniforms as necessary during the early practices of summer. In order to fit you properly, please wear appropriate clothing such as what you would typically wear under your uniform.  Cargo or denim shorts are not allowed under the uniform as they may compromise the fabric, and if worn will delay the process. Thank you!

*** HELP NEEDED***

UNIFORM/FLAG HELP FOR MARCHING BAND - We are in need of help in the following areas for the upcoming 2018 marching band season!  WE ARE IN DESPERATE NEED OF ANYONE WHO CAN HELP HEM UNIFORMS!

HEMMING CREW – Must be able to hand stitch a hem using a “whipstitch” or “over/under” (depending on what you call it). Training will be provided to explain how to read the hemming instructions for each uniform.  You should also be able to sew a straight and zigazg stitch on a sewing machine, as well as provide sewing machine. Hemming is done at home after signing out uniforms - then they are returned upon completion. All hemming must be completed no later than August due to the timing of away band camp and Kennywood.  Hemming can start with the Music Camp over June 18-20th.

CUTTING CREW – NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED. Training will be provided. The cutting crew cuts the individual pieces of flags out then puts the sewing kits together for our flag sewers. Must be available select evenings in August after away band camp. We cut in the art room at the high school.  Good scissors that cut fabric and a good sense of fun are all that is required!

SEWING CREW – Must have a sewing machine.  There will be a “group review class” for those who need reminded on the basics.  We will be using straight and zigzag stitches.  Flags are usually sewn at home with detailed directions and provide own sewing machine. Flags are sewn at home with detailed sewing instructions and pictures. However, help is available for anyone who needs it.  Trusted family members or friends are welcome to sew with us as well! (A trusted family member/friend is defined as someone who will accurately sew a flag and return it on time.) Flag sewing takes place during the months of August and September with the final flags being completed mid-September. This is a vital area of need and your help is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!!! Please contact Denise Wolf before the school year ends at uniforms@moonband.org or 412-580-3147.

CLEANING CREW – NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED. Training will be provided. Periodically through the year, the uniforms are sent to the dry cleaners for cleaning. When they are returned, the jackets are separate from the pants. The cleaning crew puts the uniforms back together and returns them to the uniform room. Must be available a handful of select evenings throughout the year.

CHAPERONE CREW – NO EXPERIENCE NEEDED. Training will be provided. After a performance, the students are required to hang their uniforms back in the uniform room neatly. The chaperone crew quickly checks that they have hung their uniform back on the hanger neatly and accurately. This extends the life of our uniforms and keeps them looking crisp. Must be available select evenings before/after football games, concerts, parades, etc. A schedule will be developed assigning responsibility to each performance.

Fitting and hemming help is the most urgent at the present time. Please contact Denise Wolf before this school year ends at denisewolf13@gmail.com for those two areas, but anytime over the summer for the other areas. Your help is greatly appreciated!!! Thank you!

SUMMER MAILER DISTRIBUTED TO STUDENTS AFTER WEDNESAY, JUNE 20 REHEARSAL
To save on postage, the summer mailer was distributed after the Wednesday, June 20 Rehearsal in a large manila envelope.  This contains various information pertaining to band camps, compression shirts, and other MABPO forms.  If your child was not at the Wednesday, 6/20 rehearsal, the mailer was sent via USPS on Thursday, 6/21 and should have been received on Saturday 6/23.  All of the information in the mailer will be placed on the moonband.org web-site in the student documents section.

Bands of America Regional at The Pro-Football Hall of Fame Stadium –October 13, 2018 - IMPORTANT
The MAHS Marching Band will be defending its 2016 and 2017 AA title at the BOA Regional held at Canton, Ohio Pro-Football Hall of Fame Stadium.  (Yes, this is the same stadium where the Hall of Fame game is played, Chicago vs Baltimore on 8/2 this year).
As of now, we are slated to perform between 2PM-4PM.  Times will be solidified in late August.  Students will be reporting to the H.S. around 9AM, departing on three motor coaches, arriving, warming-up, performance in the preliminary competition, and either watching the finals performance, or performing in the finals performance, which begins around 7:00pm.  Logistics are being worked out now, this will be an extremely long day for all involved, please plan accordingly.

2018/2019 Fall Sports Physicals for Marching Band Students.
MASD requires all students who participate in Marching Band to obtain a Physical Examination from either their personal physician or the school physician.  All students/parents must register on the PA 8 to 18 Athletic site and select band as the fall sport.  Parents must fill out the on-line portion of the physical examination, then print out the physician/doctor portion to take with them to the examination.
     - The school will be sponsoring physical examination on Wednesday July 25 at the High School Athletic Office from 5PM-7PM.  The cost is $20.
     - All band students must have completed their registration on PA 8 to 18 Athletic site and obtain a physical prior to departing for away band camp on July 29.

     - Color Guard Members, ONLY , will be scheduled for a Baseline Concussion Test throughout the summer months.  Your appointment time was communicated during the June 18-20 rehearsals.

DRUM CORPS INTERNATIONAL SHOW - June 28, 2018
Help Needed for DCI - If you want to be able to watch the show, there are still a few things that you can do to support the band.
 -  We could use 4 people Wed afternoon 6/27 from 1:30-3:30
to help set up the concession stand.
 -  We could use donated hot perogies cooked in butter (large Sam’s size bag delivered hot to the stand around 5:45)

If you are interested in either helping Wed afternoon or supplying  Perogies, please email home@Keppel-insurance.com
Thanks so much for helping!

We hope that you have proudly displayed your Band/Orchestra Yard Note in your front yard since the Fall of 2017.
Please remember that all Notes need to be returned to the MABPO - we recycle each note for the following year's graduating seniors.  Therefore, mark your calendar on or before Saturday, August 4, 2018, to make arrangements to return your note to Sherri Von Stein at 215 Oak Highland Drive. (Please do not drop off your Note at the school.)
A very special "thank you" to all seniors and their parents who have already taken the time to deliver their notes to Sherri.  If you have any questions, please email Sherri at

In addition, I have transferred monies from graduating senior's accounts to their respective sibling's accounts still in band.
Finally, if your student was in the winter guard and has a negative balance, those funds are due immediately. Winter guard members were sent individual invoices several weeks ago and are now past due. Thank you.

Thank you!

STUDENT ACCOUNTS
All student accounts are current. All fundraisers have been entered. However, Aramark is only current through the May 25th game. So, if you worked for your student after that date, you still have funds coming to your student's account.  Those will be entered as soon as I receive the checks from Aramark.
In addition, I have transferred monies from graduating senior's accounts to their respective sibling's accounts still in band.
Finally, if your student was in the winter guard and has a negative balance, those funds are due immediately. Winter guard members were sent individual invoices several weeks ago and are now past due. Thank you.
