FUNDRAISING
The annual Pancake Breakfast and Cookie Walk will take place on Sunday, December 10, from 8:00 AM - noon, in the high school cafeteria.  This is a popular community event.  In addition to pancakes and cookies, several student groups will perform and Santa will be there!  Students can earn money for their accounts buy selling tickets and/or buy working a shift at the breakfast.  Sign-Up Sheets for students to work shifts will be posted in the classroom after Thanksgiving break.  Be on the look-out for the sign-up genius shortly after Thanksgiving to sign-up for donations, volunteering, and of course, cookie baking!  Flyers for the pancake breakfast are online.  Please, print a flyer to post around the area at local churches and businesses to spread the word!

Black Friday raffle tickets are due Tuesday, November 21.  Payment and ticket stubs must be received prior to Friday's drawing to be valid.

FLASH HOAGIE & PEPPERONI ROLL SALE:  Due to popular demand, we are holding another hoagie and pepperoni roll sale with a very short turn-around time.  The sale begins 
Tuesday, November 21.  Orders are due on Thursday, December 7, by the end of the school day.  Orders should only be placed in the band room mailbox and should not be mailed to the UPS box.  Also, due to the nature of this sale, absolutely no late orders can be accepted.  Forms are on-line and in the band room.

SENIOR POLE NOTES will continue to be distributed (at the 
December 4th
 Parent Meeting, Pancake Breakfast, and Winter Concert) until all students have received them.  Please make it a point to retrieve your senior's pole note

UMBRELLAS
The MABPO is selling large red and white paneled golf umbrellas with “Moon Area” and the tiger logo printed on one panel.  Umbrellas are $15.00 each.  If you'd like to buy an umbrella, please contact Sherri directly at president@moonband.org.

POP/GATORADE
Pop/Gatorade leftover from the concession stand is available for purchase at a discounted price.
If you are interested for yourself, a family event, or if you are involved with another organization that could use some, please contact Kathy Keppel at: home@keppel-insurance.com for the specific quantities available of each flavor.  I have 20 oz plastic bottles of:  Orange Gatorade, Mist Twist, Diet Pepsi, Mountain Dew, Brisk Tea, Mug Root beer, and Orange Crush.


UPCOMING EVENTS AT HEINZ FIELD
It is not too late to join us in working Steelers and Pitt games at Heinz Field to raise funds for your band or orchestra student.  This is the best way to quickly raise enough money to pay for some or all of the upcoming Disney trip!  Please consider joining us, we've had great participation this year so you never have to go alone!  The next event to work at Heinz Field is the Steelers game on Sunday, December 10th with a report time of 5:00 PM (kickoff at 8:30).   Please contact Heather Park to find out more about this opportunity at hburakow@yahoo.com.

UNIFORMS
The following positions are available for Job Shadow:

BAND UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of band uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments, coordinate shoe order (including guard), uniform cleaning (done by professional cleaners) coordinate the chaperoning of uniforms (including guard) before/after any event requiring a uniform (football games, competitions, parades, concerts, etc.). Coordinate Band, C/G & Orchestra Jacket orders.  Works as a team with Color Guard Uniform Coordinator and Formal Wear Coordinator.

COLOR GUARD/WINTER GUARD UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments,  uniform cleaning (done at home).  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator and Flag Sewing Coordinator.

FORMAL WEAR COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW:  Responsible for fitting and placing order of formal wear order for Symphonic Band and Orchestra.  Coordinate alterations with sewing parents when appropriate.  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator.

Don’t forget to order Scrip gift cards for everyone on your Christmas list!! The next Scrip gift card order deadline has been changed due to the Band Parent Meeting being rescheduled.  Gift card orders are due Thursday, Dec. 7th and will be delivered on Wednesday, Dec. 13th at the Sarris candy pickup and Dec. 20th at the concert.  A limited number of $10 gift cards (Arby’s, Dunkin Donuts, Eat’n Park, Starbucks and Subway) will also be available for sale.

BAND DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS:  Mr. Nick Barthen
"So You Want to Major in Music in College?" - Tuesday, November 21, 2017 - 7:00PM - MAHS LGI
The MASD Music Department is sponsoring a presentation and open forum for parents and students regarding study after high school in the field of music.  Professors from area colleges as well as the MASD Music Faculty will be on hand to answer questions, provide a brief description of what to expect as a music major, the audition process, and various other topics.  Literature from collegiate music departments will be available.  This meeting will take place in the LGI at the High School.  Students in grades 8-12 are welcome.  If you have any questions, contact Mr. Barthen for additional details.

Winter Color Guard Parent and Student Meeting - Monday, November 20 - 7:00PM - H.S. Band Room
There will be a brief informational and organizational meeting for Parents and Students of Marching Band Color Guard Members who are interested in being a member of the Winter Color Guard for the 2018 season.  Parents and students should attend this meeting!

CHAPERONES NEEDED FOR FLORIDA TRIP!!
We are still in need of four parents to chaperone the Florida trip in February.  Contact Mr. Barthen if interested

Band Florida Performance Tour February 13 - February 19, 2018 – Updated 10/2/17
The Marching Band and Symphonic Band will be traveling to Florida in February 2018 to perform in the Walt Disney World, Florida resort.  The band will depart on Tuesday, February 13, after school and depart Orlando on Sunday, February 18, returning to MAHS on February 19.  The band's preliminary performance day is Thursday, February 15 at the Magic Kingdom (time is unknown).  The Symphonic Band performance date is not confirmed at this time.   The cost of the trip is estimated at $975, this includes all transportation, hotel, tickets to 3 Disney Parks, and a duel admission to Universal Studios (Island of Adventure and Universal), as well as all meals while in Florida, (the only meals that are not covered are meals while en route to FL or PA).  There are numerous opportunities to fundraise a portion or all of this trip throughout the fall/winter.  Please take advantage of these fundraisers to offset the cost of this trip.

Winter Instrumental Concert
The High School Winter Instrumental Concert is on Wednesday, December 20 at 7:00PM in the MAHS Auditorium.  Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble will perform.  
Attire for this performance is as follows:

Symphonic Band - Formal Tux and/or Gowns
Concert Band - Dress clothes; MEN - shirt and tie, dark dress pants (No Khaki's) matching dress shoes, socks, belt; DOES NOT NEED TO BE BLACK AND WHITE; LADIES -  Pants, school appropriate length skirts (remember you are sitting down, elevated above audience and not permitted to cross your legs while you perform) appropriate shoes.

Private Instrumental Lessons
Private Instrumental lessons is a great way to excel on your instrument. Not only will you learn specific techniques on your instrument, from a teacher who is an expert on your instrument, but also it will open doors to new repertoire, solo, ensemble, etc. Private lessons will also provide confidence when performing in an ensemble or auditioning for any PMEA festival. Contact Mr. Barthen for a complete list of private instructors in the area.

Under PA Law Act 153, The State of Pennsylvania is requiring all adults who volunteer in any capacity within the school to obtain background checks. This will include parents who volunteer to chaperone the MAHS Marching Band at football games, parades, band camps, and trips. Chaperones are required to complete the PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprints. The FBI Fingerprint is only if the volunteer has not been a state of PA resident for at least 10 years. Please visit http://www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov for additional information.

The Black Friday Bountiful Basket Raffle fundraiser is under way!  As a reminder, the big drawing will be based on the PA 7:00 PM Daily Number on Friday, November 24th.  The winning ticket holder will receive the prize basket which will include gift cards from various local businesses totaling over $400.

Chaperones are required to complete the PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprints. PMEA Honors Jazz Band – Concession Help Needed – Monday November 13, 2017
Moon is hosting the Auditions and we are planning to have a small concession stand at the High School.  We will need a few volunteers to help sell pizza, snacks and drinks.  We will set up after school around 3:00/3:30 and will sell until they are done with tryouts.  Please email Kathy home@keppel-insurance.com if you would like to help.  Please state when you can be there so we can cover set-up through the evening. 

FUNDRAISING
You should have received your Black Friday Bountiful Basket Raffle tickets in the mail.  Please, contact fundraising@moonarea.net if you did not.  This fundraiser benefits the general fund and is required if your students plans on participating in the February Florida trip.  The general fund benefits all band and orchestra students.  Tickets and payment are due by Tuesday, November 21.  The drawing will be based on the PA 7:00 PM Daily Number.  The prize includes gift card from various local businesses totaling over $400.  Please consider donating one or more of these gift cards!, To donate, click on the link to the Bountiful Basket Sign-up Genius.

The Sarris Holiday Candy Sale began on 
Tuesday, October 24.  These high quality chocolates and candies make great teacher gifts, hostess gifts, and stocking stuffers!  Orders are due on November 14.  Delivery will be on December 13Information sheets and order forms are available on-line or in the band room.  The Sarris flyer is available in the band room or HERE.

*Reminder: The NewMe Pie order and Chestnut Hill Candle fundraisers pick-up date is Wednesday, November 15, from 4-5:45PM, at the High School Student Entrance. 

The annual Pancake Breakfast and Cookie Walk will take place on Sunday, December 10, from 8:00 AM - noon, in the high school cafeteria.  This is a popular community event.  In addition to pancakes and cookies, several student groups will perform and Santa will be there!  Students can earn money for their accounts buy selling tickets and/or buy working a shift at the breakfast.  Tickets and information sheets will be mailed later this week.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT HEINZ FIELD
It is not too late to join us in working Steelers and Pitt games at Heinz Field to raise funds for your band or orchestra student.  This is the best way to quickly raise enough money to pay for some or all of the upcoming Disney trip!  Please consider joining us, we've had great participation this year so you never have to go alone!  The next event to work at Heinz Field is the Steelers game on Thursday, November 16th with a report time of 5:00  Please contact Heather Park to find out more about this opportunity at hburakow@yahoo.com.

BAND UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of band uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments, coordinate shoe order (including guard), uniform cleaning (done by professional cleaners) coordinate the chaperoning of uniforms (including guard) before/after any event requiring a uniform (football games, competitions, parades, concerts, etc.). Coordinate Band, C/G & Orchestra Jacket orders.  Works as a team with Color Guard Uniform Coordinator and Formal Wear Coordinator.

COLOR GUARD/WINTER GUARD UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments,  uniform cleaning (done at home).  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator and Flag Sewing Coordinator.

FORMAL WEAR COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW:  Responsible for fitting and placing order of formal wear order for Symphonic Band and Orchestra.  Coordinate alterations with sewing parents when appropriate.  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator.

BAND DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS:  Mr. Nick Barthen
"So You Want to Major in Music in College?" - Tuesday, November 21, 2017 - 7:00PM - MAHS LGI
The MASD Music Department is sponsoring a presentation and open forum for parents and students regarding study after high school in the field of music.  Professors from area colleges as well as the MASD Music Faculty will be on hand to answer questions, provide a brief description of what to expect as a music major, the audition process, and various other topics.  Literature from collegiate music departments will be available.  This meeting will take place in the LGI at the High School.  Students in grades 8-12 are welcome.  If you have any questions, contact Mr. Barthen for additional details.

Band Florida Performance Tour February 13 - February 19, 2018 – Updated 10/2/17
The Marching Band and Symphonic Band will be traveling to Florida in February 2018 to perform in the Walt Disney World, Florida resort.  The band will depart on Tuesday, February 13, after school and depart Orlando on Sunday, February 18, returning to MAHS on February 19.  The band's preliminary performance day is Thursday, February 15 at the Magic Kingdom (time is unknown).  The Symphonic Band performance date is not confirmed at this time.   The cost of the trip is estimated at $975, this includes all transportation, hotel, tickets to 3 Disney Parks, and a duel admission to Universal Studios (Island of Adventure and Universal), as well as all meals while in Florida, (the only meals that are not covered are meals while en route to FL or PA).  There are numerous opportunities to fundraise a portion or all of this trip throughout the fall/winter.  Please take advantage of these fundraisers to offset the cost of this trip.

Florida Commitment Forms were mailed (USPS) on Friday, 9/29.  These forms are due by 10/27/17.  Please contact Mr. Barthen if you did not receive this information in the mail.  


Winter Instrumental Concert
The High School Winter Instrumental Concert is on Wednesday, December 20 at 7:00PM in the MAHS Auditorium.  Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble will perform.  
Attire for this performance is as follows:

Symphonic Band - Formal Tux and/or Gowns
Concert Band - Dress clothes; MEN - shirt and tie, dark dress pants (No Khaki's) matching dress shoes, socks, belt; DOES NOT NEED TO BE BLACK AND WHITE; LADIES -  Pants, school appropriate length skirts (remember you are sitting down, elevated above audience and not permitted to cross your legs while you perform) appropriate shoes.

Private Instrumental lessons is a great way to excel on your instrument. Not only will you learn specific techniques on your instrument, from a teacher who is an expert on your instrument, but also it will open doors to new repertoire, solo, ensemble, etc. Private lessons will also provide confidence when performing in an ensemble or auditioning for any PMEA festival. Contact Mr. Barthen for a complete list of private instructors in the area.

SENIOR RECOGNITION THANK YOUS
A note of thanks to the many people who helped to put together the Senior Recognition celebration on Friday night.
Thank you to all of the band parents who donated the food items, drinks and balloons.  And thank you to the many volunteers who worked so hard during preparation, set-up, serving and clean-up.
Special thank you's to our halftime announcer Mr. Jaworowski,  and Jared Tuk for his help with photos and the Video Slideshow.  And continued thanks to Cindy Bartus and the Alumni Organization for taking care of special surprises for the Senior Parents. 

It was a wonderful evening, and hopefully a memorable one for the seniors, thanks to you all!

SPECIAL THANKS to Mickel Howell and Johnathan & Sherri Von Stein for braving the elements this past Sunday morning to remove the 31 senior pole notes along Tiger Trail.  It was 39 degrees and raining -- not the ideal scenario, but glad we didn't have to battle this type of weather during our football games and competitions!  Thanks again, Mickel, Johnathan, and Sherri!

US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir - Thursday, November 2, 2017 - 7PM - MAHS Auditorium
The MAHS Music Department will be hosting the US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 7PM in the MAHS Auditorium.  Tickets are free and are available by visiting thewww.moonarea.net web-site, click view all news, then opening the press release contained in the news area.  In the press release, there is a direct link to the Army Field Band site, where you are able to select number of tickets, and print the tickets.  Another option is to call 412-264-9440 ext 2007, leaving a message for number of tickets.  These will be available at the will-call window the night of the concert.

This will include parents who volunteer to chaperone the MAHS Marching Band at football games, parades, band camps, and trips. Chaperones are required to complete the PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprints. The FBI Fingerprint is only if the volunteer has not been a state of PA resident for at least 10 years. Please visit http://www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov for additional information.

SENIOR RECOGNITION NIGHT – Friday, October 27, 2017
PLEASE HELP!  We still need the following to make this special night a success:
- (2) Large Vegetable Trays (Drop off Thursday before practice)
- A volunteer to help with Registration (available by 4:15)
- (2) volunteers to reserve bleachers for parents (available by 5:15)
- (3) volunteers for clean up
- (3) one dozen, mixed red/white, helium-filled latex balloons w/ribbons
- (5) 9x13 aluminum trays of pre-cooked cheesy potatoes (see recipe HERE)
- (3) 3# bags of salad
- (1) bottle of ranch salad dressing
- (4) 3-dozen increments of cookies
- (1) 10-pack of hot chocolate

CONCESSIONS:
Since Friday is Senior Night, we cannot have any parents of Senior Band Members volunteer in the concession stand.  We really need some other parents to step up and help!  Please volunteer to work this Friday during the game.  We could also use a couple of parents who have worked before to help lead the newer volunteers.  Please volunteer if you can!  Thank you!

UMBRELLAS
The MABPO is selling large red and white paneled golf umbrellas with “Moon Area” and the tiger logo printed on one panel.  Umbrellas are $15.00 each.  If you'd like to buy an umbrella, please contact Sherri directly at president@moonband.org .

FUNDRAISING
The NewMe Pie orders and payments are due on Tuesday, October 24.  Delivery will be on Wednesday, November 15, at the High School Student Entrance, from 3-4:45. 

The Holiday Greenery Sale is also underway.  Holiday wreaths, garlands, and poinsettias from Suburban Landscapes are available.  Orders are due on October 31.  Delivery will be on December 6 - just in time to decorate for the holidays!  Information sheets and order form will be available online or in the band room.

The Sarris Holiday Candy Sale begins on 
Tuesday, October 24.  These high quality chocolates and candies make great teacher gifts, hostess gifts, and stocking stuffers!  Orders are due on November 14.  Delivery will be on December 13Information sheets and order forms are available on-line or in the band room.  The Sarris flyer is available in the band room or HERE.

Watch your mailbox for the Black Friday Bountiful Basket Raffle fundraiser tickets and information.  This fundraiser benefits the general fund and is required if your students plans on participating in the February Florida trip.  The general fund benefits all band and orchestra students.  Tickets and payment are due by Tuesday, November 21.  The drawing will be based on the PA 7:00 PM Daily Number.  The prize includes gift card from various local businesses totaling over $400.  If you would like to donate one or more of these gift cards, please click on the link to the Bountiful Basket Sign-up Genius.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT HEINZ FIELD
It is not too late to join us in working Steelers and Pitt games at Heinz Field to raise funds for your band or orchestra student.  This is the best way to quickly raise enough money to pay for some or all of the upcoming Disney trip!  Please consider joining us, we've had great participation this year so you never have to go alone!  The next event to work at Heinz Field is the Pitt game on Thursday, November 9th with a report time of 4:00.  Please contact Heather Park to find out more about this opportunity at hburakow@yahoo.com.

PIMBA Championship T-shirts
T-shirts will be available for pickup from Laura Wall on Thursday at Trunk or Treat. Shirts were not handed out Saturday. We received the shirts in bulk and need to sort them into individual orders. If you or your student will not be participating Thursday please contact Laura Wall to make arrangements for pickup.

UNIFORMS
The following positions are available for Job Shadow:

BAND UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of band uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments, coordinate shoe order (including guard), uniform cleaning (done by professional cleaners) coordinate the chaperoning of uniforms (including guard) before/after any event requiring a uniform (football games, competitions, parades, concerts, etc.). Coordinate Band, C/G & Orchestra Jacket orders.  Works as a team with Color Guard Uniform Coordinator and Formal Wear Coordinator.

COLOR GUARD/WINTER GUARD UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments,  uniform cleaning (done at home).  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator and Flag Sewing Coordinator.

FORMAL WEAR COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW:  Responsible for fitting and placing order of formal wear order for Symphonic Band and Orchestra.  Coordinate alterations with sewing parents when appropriate.  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator.

BAND DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS:  Mr. Nick Barthen
THANK YOU! – I would like to take this opportunity to extend the staff’s sincere gratitude toward the students, parents, MABPO, and the community on an extremely successful marching band season.  The band grew in many ways during the season to place our organization in the upper echelon of organizations not only in Western Pennsylvania, but also in the nation.  Thanks to the parents for assisting the band in many ways, and lastly, THANK YOU to the students who persevered through to the end of the season to ensure our product “Bloomed”.  Thank you!

Band Florida Performance Tour February 13 - February 19, 2018 – Updated 10/2/17
The Marching Band and Symphonic Band will be traveling to Florida in February 2018 to perform in the Walt Disney World, Florida resort.  The band will depart on Tuesday, February 13, after school and depart Orlando on Sunday, February 18, returning to MAHS on February 19.  The band's preliminary performance day is Thursday, February 15 at the Magic Kingdom (time is unknown).  The Symphonic Band performance date is not confirmed at this time.   The cost of the trip is estimated at $975, this includes all transportation, hotel, tickets to 3 Disney Parks, and a duel admission to Universal Studios (Island of Adventure and Universal), as well as all meals while in Florida, (the only meals that are not covered are meals while en route to FL or PA).  There are numerous opportunities to fundraise a portion or all of this trip throughout the fall/winter.  Please take advantage of these fundraisers to offset the cost of this trip.

Florida Commitment Forms were mailed (USPS) on Friday, 9/29.  These forms are due by 10/27/17.  Please contact Mr. Barthen if you did not receive this information in the mail.  


US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir - Thursday, November 2, 2017 - 7PM - MAHS Auditorium
The MAHS Music Department will be hosting the US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 7PM in the MAHS Auditorium.  Tickets are free and are available by visiting thewww.moonarea.net web-site, click view all news, then opening the press release contained in the news area.  In the press release, there is a direct link to the Army Field Band site, where you are able to select number of tickets, and print the tickets.  Another option is to call 412-264-9440 ext 2007, leaving a message for number of tickets.  These will be available at the will-call window the night of the concert.

Halloween Parade at Moon Park 10/25 - Moon Twp. Park & Rec. is holding a Halloween event on Wednesday, 10/25.  This is a voluntary event, but we need to have at least 20-30 students attend.  Students should arrive at Moon Park at 3:30 PM at the Amphitheater, and activities will conclude at 6:30PM.  Students are encouraged to dress in costume, we will be marching a mini-parade using fight song, stand cheers, etc.

TRUNK OR TREAT – 10/26 – This has become a tradition to decorate parent’s vehicles and pass out candy to the kid’s ala trick-or treating around the neighborhoods/cars.  Students will dress-up for rehearsal, and trunk-or treat.  This will begin around 7:00PM.  Check www.moonband.org for additional details and pictures from previous years events.  To make candy plans, we have 120 students in the marching band!

Winter Instrumental Concert
The High School Winter Instrumental Concert is on Wednesday, December 20 at 7:00PM in the MAHS Auditorium.  Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Percussion Ensemble will perform.  
Attire for this performance is as follows:

Symphonic Band - Formal Tux and/or Gowns
Concert Band - Dress clothes; MEN - shirt and tie, dark dress pants (No Khaki's) matching dress shoes, socks, belt;  DOES NOT NEED TO BE BLACK AND WHITE;  LADIES -  Pants, school appropriate length skirts (remember you are sitting down, elevated above audience and not permitted to cross your legs while you perform) appropriate shoes.  
Dress rehearsals for this event will be held in the evening before the concerts.  Dates will be distributed very shortly, be on the look-out for these dates!


Marching Band Season
Marching band will conclude after the October 27 football game vs. West Allegheny.  Evening rehearsals will conclude after theThursday, October 26 rehearsal.  There will not be rehearsal onTuesday, October 24.

Private Instrumental Lessons
Private Instrumental lessons is a great way to excel on your instrument. Not only will you learn specific techniques on your instrument, from a teacher who is an expert on your instrument, but also it will open doors to new repertoire, solo, ensemble, etc. Private lessons will also provide confidence when performing in an ensemble or auditioning for any PMEA festival. Contact Mr. Barthen for a complete list of private instructors in the area.
