Special Thanks - Jacket & Note Ceremony
A special "thank you" to Tom & Dianne Pelkington for hosting the Note Painting Party at their home in September, and a "thank you" to their painting team. The Pelkington's worked many hours behind the scenes to prepare and repair, or build, new notes that were paint-ready for the team. A total of 46 notes were painted and assembled for our Instrumental Music students. Thank you again, Tom & Dianne!!
A special "thank you" to Denise Wolf for all the behind-the-scenes coordination in preparing the band jackets for distribution at the band jacket ceremony, and "thank you" to all who assisted. Denise and her team made themselves available to all band and orchestra jacket-eligible students at the end of last school year for jacket fittings, orders, and pick-up. We appreciate the time and effort Denise puts into this process every year for our students.

"Moon Area Tigers" light-up bracelets are available for purchase. Each band is $5.00. Profits benefit the general fund which benefits all band and orchestra students. Order forms are available in the band room or online. A photo of the bracelets is also available online.
** Extra, Extra!** The 5 Generations/Jenny Lee fundraiser delivery will be on Wednesday, October 18, in the high school cafeteria, from 4:00 - 5:45 PM. There will be extra loaves of Cinnamon, Apple Cinnamon, Pumpkin Walnut, Chocolate Chip, and Parmesan breads. If you would like to purchase these please let me know. Your student will get credit for his or her band account. It will be first come, first served!
It's time for our fall NewMe's Pie fundraiser! The 9- inch pie varieties include apple, apple cranberry, peach, blueberry, cherry, pumpkin, and Minamyer surprise. 4-inch chicken pot pies are also available. Orders and payments are due on Tuesday, October 24. Delivery will be on Wednesday, November 15. Information sheets and order forms are available online and in the band room. ** Bonus! The Minamyers have added the Canadian Butter tarts to the sale! These mini-pies come in a 4-pack for $12.00 each pack. You can add these on to your regular order form or print one of the new forms.
The Holiday Greenery Sale begins on Tuesday, October 10. Holiday wreaths, garlands, and poinsettias from Suburban Landscapes will be available. Orders are due on October 31. Delivery will be on December 6 - just in time to decorate for the holidays! Information sheets and order form will be available online or in the band room.

UPCOMING EVENTS AT HEINZ FIELD
If you are interested in working any Steelers or Pitt games at Heinz Field this season to raise funds for your band or orchestra student, you must have a valid ServSafe certification and RAMP or TEAM certification. It is not too late to do these and they can be completed on your own time! Please contact Heather Park to find out more about this opportunity at firstname.lastname@example.org. This is the best way to quickly raise enough money to pay for some or all of the upcoming Disney trip! The next event to work at Heinz Field is the Steeler's game on Sunday, October 22nd. BAND UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of band uniform care and fitting. Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments, coordinate shoe order (including guard), uniform cleaning (done by professional cleaners) coordinate the chaperoning of uniforms (including guard) before/after any event requiring a uniform (football games, competitions, parades, concerts, etc.). Coordinate Band, C/G & Orchestra Jacket orders. Works as a team with Color Guard Uniform Coordinator and Formal Wear Coordinator.
COLOR GUARD/WINTER GUARD UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of uniform care and fitting. Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments, uniform cleaning (done at home). Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator and Flag Sewing Coordinator.
FORMAL WEAR COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for fitting and placing order of formal wear order for Symphonic Band and Orchestra. Coordinate alterations with sewing parents when appropriate. Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator.

BAND DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS: Mr. Nick Barthen
Band Florida Performance Tour - February 13 - February 19, 2018 – Updated 10/2/17
The Marching Band and Symphonic Band will be traveling to Florida in February 2018 to perform in the Walt Disney World, Florida resort. The band will depart on Tuesday, February 13, after school and depart Orlando on Sunday, February 18, returning to MAHS on February 19. The band's preliminary performance day is Thursday, February 15 at the Magic Kingdom (time is unknown). The Symphonic Band performance date is not confirmed at this time. The cost of the trip is estimated at $975, this includes all transportation, hotel, tickets to 3 Disney Parks, and a duel admission to Universal Studios (Island of Adventure and Universal), as well as all meals while in Florida, (the only meals that are not covered are meals while en route to FL or PA). There are numerous opportunities to fundraise a portion or all of this trip throughout the fall/winter. Please take advantage of these fundraisers to offset the cost of this trip.
Florida Commitment Forms were mailed (USPS) on Friday, 9/29. These forms are due by 10/27/17. Please contact Mr. Barthen if you did not receive this information in the mail.
SAT/ACT/PSAT Fall Testing Dates
October 14 - PSAT - Band has a competition at Deer Lakes H.S. - Students will still be able to take the test and participate in all Marching Band activities.
October 28 - ACT - Band is off that weekend.
US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir - Thursday, November 2, 2017 - 7PM - MAHS Auditorium
The MAHS Music Department will be hosting the US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 7PM in the MAHS Auditorium. Tickets are free and are available by visiting thewww.moonarea.net web-site, click view all news, then opening the press release contained in the news area. In the press release, there is a direct link to the Army Field Band site, where you are able to select number of tickets, and print the tickets. Another option is to call 412-264-9440 ext 2007, leaving a message for number of tickets. These will be available at the will-call window the night of the concert.
Halloween Parade at Moon Park 10/25 - Moon Twp. Park & Rec. is holding a Halloween event on Wednesday, 10/25. This is a voluntary event, but we need to have at least 20-30 students attend. Students should arrive at Moon Park at 3:30 PM at the Amphitheater, and activities will conclude at6:30PM. Students are encouraged to dress in costume, we will be marching a mini-parade using fight song, stand cheers, etc.
TRUNK OR TREAT – 10/26 – This has become a tradition to decorate parent’s vehicles and pass out candy to the kid’s ala trick-or treating around the neighborhoods/cars. Students will dress-up for rehearsal, and trunk-or treat. This will begin around 8:00PM. Check www.moonband.org for additional details and pictures from previous years events. To make candy plans, we have 120 students in the marching band!

Private Instrumental Lessons
Private Instrumental lessons is a great way to excel on your instrument. Not only will you learn specific techniques on your instrument, from a teacher who is an expert on your instrument, but also it will open doors to new repertoire, solo, ensemble, etc. Private lessons will also provide confidence when performing in an ensemble or auditioning for any PMEA festival. Contact Mr. Barthen for a complete list of private instructors in the area.

Under PA Law Act 153, The State of Pennsylvania is requiring all adults who volunteer in any capacity within the school to obtain background checks. This will include parents who volunteer to chaperone the MAHS Marching Band at football games, parades, band camps, and trips. Chaperones are required to complete the PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprints. The FBI Fingerprint is only if the volunteer has not been a state of PA resident for at least 10 years. Please visit http://www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov for additional information.
