SENIOR RECOGNITION NIGHT

CONCESSION STAND
Thank you to everyone who helped to setup and work the concession stand this past Saturday for the PIMBA Competition! We couldn’t have done it without you!
This Friday night we have a home football game.  The band runs the home concession stand during the game on Friday night (from 5:30-10).  We set up for this on Thursday night (this week from 7:30-8:30, we will be done before the jacket and band note distribution). If you can help to set up, or work the stand, please sign up below.

2017 PIMBA Championships T-Shirt Order
PIMBA Championship T-shirts can be pre-ordered in a variety of colors and Adult sizes. Shirts may be pre-ordered for $14 each ($16 for 2XL; $18 for 3XL) in the colors and sizes listed on the order form.
Pre-sale orders are due to Laura Wall by Tuesday, Sept 26. Please make checks payable to GATEWAY BAND BOOSTERS. Orders can be placed in the MABPO box in the band room or mailed (postmark by 9/23) to Laura Wall, PIMBA SHIRT ORDER, 313 Smallwood Drive, Moon Twp.

2017 Tour Shirts
The 2017 BLOOM Tour Shirts are still available for purchase.  Support the Moon Area Marching Band this season by wearing a shirt featuring this year's competition theme during games and competitions.  In keeping with this year's theme, the shirts are kelly green and are still available in Small and X-Large sizes. - please click HERE for size and ordering details.

UMBRELLAS
Back by popular demand, the band parent organization will once again be selling red and white umbrellas.  If you missed the parent meeting last Thursday and you’re interested in purchasing an umbrella, contact Sherri at president@moonband.org . Umbrellas are $15.

FUNDRAISING
"Moon Area Tigers" light-up bracelets are available for purchase.  Each band is $5.00.  Profits benefit the general fund which benefits all band and orchestra students.  Order forms are available in the band room or online.  A photo of the bracelets is also available online.

Our 5 Generations/Jenny Lee Swirl Breads fundraiser is underway.  These delicious round loaves of swirl bread are available in 5 flavors: Cinnamon, Apple cinnamon, Pumpkin walnut, Chocolate chip, and Parmesan garlic.  Jenny Lee chocolate chip cookies are also available during this fundraiser. 
Order forms and information can be found online or in the band room.  Orders are due on October 3. 

UPCOMING EVENTS AT HEINZ FIELD
If you are interested in working any Steelers or Pitt games at Heinz Field this season to raise funds for your band or orchestra student, you must have a valid ServSafe certification and RAMP or TEAM certification.  It is not too late to do these and they can be completed on your own time!  Please contact Heather Park to find out more about this opportunity at hburakow@yahoo.com.  This is the best way to quickly raise enough money to pay for some or all of the upcoming Disney trip!  The next event to work at Heinz Field is the Steelers game on Sunday, October 8th with a report time of 9:30 AM.  Please email Heather if you are interested.

BAND DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS:  Mr. Nick Barthen
Moon Area H.S. PIMBA Competition - 2017 
Once again, a TREMENDOUS THANK YOU goes out to all the parent volunteers who assisted in the 2017 PIMBA Competition at Moon Area H.S. Everything ran smoothly.  Many compliments from visiting staff, judges, visiting chaperones, and guests, as well as superior performances from all bands.  Again, thank you for all you do for the band organizations. 

Music Memorization Testing Schedule
Make-ups for Music Memorization testing are in full swing.  Skyward contains parts that the student did not pass.  Students have until October 6, 2017 to retake this test and receive full points.  Students should make and appointment with Mr. Barthen for re-testing.

Homecoming Parade - Thursday, September 28, 2017 - Report time 5:00PM
The Homecoming Parade is Thursday, September 28 at 5:30pm on the campus of MAHS.  Students will report to the M.S. Parking Lot at 5:00pm.  At 5:30pm, the parade will proceed down Tiger Trail to the Stadium.  The band will perform, other recognition will occur.  The ceremonies will conclude around 7:15PM.  We will continue our rehearsal on the M.S. Parking Lot at 7:15pm.  Rehearsal will end at 9PM.  Students should dress for the weather and try to wear something red.

Senior Notes and Band Jacket Distribution - Thursday, September 28, 2017 -8:50pm
The distribution of Senior Notes and Band Jackets will occur at 8:50pm on Thursday, 9/28 after rehearsal.  Parents who wish to attend this ceremony should arrive before 8:50pm.

Band Florida Performance Tour February 13 - February 19, 2018
The Marching Band and Symphonic Band will be traveling to Florida in February 2018 to perform in the Walt Disney World, Florida resort.  The band will depart on Tuesday, February 13, after school and depart Orlando on Sunday, February 18, returning to MAHS on February 19.  The band's preliminary performance day is Thursday, February 15 at the Magic Kingdom (time is unknown).  The Symphonic Band performance date is not confirmed at this time.   The cost of the trip is estimated at $975, this includes all transportation, hotel, tickets to 3 Disney Parks, and a duel admission to Universal Studios (Island of Adventure and Universal), as well as all meals while in Florida, (the only meals that are not covered are meals while en route to FL or PA).  There are numerous opportunities to fundraise a portion or all of this trip throughout the fall/winter.  Please take advantage of these fundraisers to offset the cost of this trip.

SAT/ACT/PSAT Fall Testing Dates

October 7 - SAT - Band is off that weekend
October 14 - PSAT - Band has a competition at Deer Lakes H.S. - Students will still be able to take the test and participate in all Marching Band activities.
October 28 - ACT - Band is off that weekend.


US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir - Thursday, November 2, 2017 - 7PM - MAHS Auditorium
The MAHS Music Department will be hosting the US Army Field Band and Soldiers Choir on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 7PM in the MAHS Auditorium.  Tickets are free, and will be distributed at a later date.  Watch the web-site and Skyward for additional details and how to reserve tickets.

Music and information will begin to appear on the www.moonband.org  web-site.  Please reference the letter you received in the mail regarding how to download this music and information.  If there are questions regarding parts, wind players e-mail Mr. Barthen at nbarthen@moonarea.net, and percussion players e-mail Mr. Fear at afear@moonarea.net.  PRACTICE YOUR MUSIC!

PMEA Honors Band Auditions

PMEA Honors Band Auditions will take place on Monday, October 2 at South Fayette High School.  There will be a school van transporting students who area auditioning.  Students CANNOT drive to this audition.

Private Instrumental Lessons
Private Instrumental lessons is a great way to excel on your instrument. Not only will you learn specific techniques on your instrument, from a teacher who is an expert on your instrument, but also it will open doors to new repertoire, solo, ensemble, etc. Private lessons will also provide confidence when performing in an ensemble or auditioning for any PMEA festival. Contact Mr. Barthen for a complete list of private instructors in the area.

FORMAL WEAR HAS ARRIVED!
Our order of formal wear for Symphonic Band and Orchestra has just arrived.   Students should plan on picking up their attire on Tuesday, October 3rd.   Symphonic Band Students will be fitted between 4-5:45.  Orchestra Students will be fitted between 5:45-7:30.  Trousers and gowns come UNHEMMED from the manufacturer, and parents are responsible for the hemming.  If you are interested, we have a few band moms who will be available on the 3rd to help you with it for a $15 fee.  There are only 30 days to exchange  items assuming they remain in ORIGINAL PACKAGING and TAGS ARE STILL ATTACHED.  It is important that students try on their formal wear asap!  Please let Denise Wolf know if you have a conflict with the time above at 412-580-3147 or uniforms@moonband.org  Thank you!

UNIFORMS
The following positions are available for Job Shadow:

BAND UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of band uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments, coordinate shoe order (including guard), uniform cleaning (done by professional cleaners) coordinate the chaperoning of uniforms (including guard) before/after any event requiring a uniform (football games, competitions, parades, concerts, etc.). Coordinate Band, C/G & Orchestra Jacket orders.  Works as a team with Color Guard Uniform Coordinator and Formal Wear Coordinator.

COLOR GUARD/WINTER GUARD UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments,  uniform cleaning (done at home).  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator and Flag Sewing Coordinator.

FORMAL WEAR COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW:  Responsible for fitting and placing order of formal wear order for Symphonic Band and Orchestra.  Coordinate alterations with sewing parents when appropriate.  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator.

Under PA Law Act 153, The State of Pennsylvania is requiring all adults who volunteer in any capacity within the school to obtain background checks. This will include parents who volunteer to chaperone the MAHS Marching Band at football games, parades, band camps, and trips. Chaperones are required to complete the PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprints. The FBI Fingerprint is only if the volunteer has not been a state of PA resident for at least 10 years. Please visit http://www.keepkidssafe.pa.gov for additional information.
