2017 Tour Shirts
The 2017 BLOOM Tour Shirts are still available for purchase.  Support the Moon Area Marching Band this season by wearing a shirt featuring this year's competition theme during games and competitions.  In keeping with this year's theme, the shirts are kelly green and come in a variety of sizes (Medium, Large and 3XL are sold out) - please click HERE for size and ordering details.

"Moon Area Tigers" light-up bracelets are available for purchase.  Each band is $5.00.  Profits benefit the general fund which benefits all band and orchestra students.  Order forms are available in the band room or online.  A photo of the bracelets is also available online.

The Chestnut Hill Candle fundraiser is underway.  Each 10-ounce, double-wick, soy candle burns for approximately 70 hours.  These candles make wonderful holiday gifts.

Our 5 Generations/Jenny Lee Swirl Breads fundraiser begins on 
Tuesday, September 12.  These delicious round loaves of swirl bread are available in 5 flavors: Cinnamon, Apple cinnamon, Pumpkin walnut, Chocolate chip, and Parmesan garlic.  Jenny Lee chocolate chip cookies are also available during this fundraiser.  Order forms and information can be found online or in the band room.  Orders will be due on October 3. 

If you are interested in working any Steelers or Pitt games at Heinz Field this season to raise funds for your band or orchestra student, you must have a valid ServSafe certification and RAMP or TEAM certification.  It is not too late to do these and they can be completed on your own time!  Please contact Heather Park to find out more about this opportunity at  This is the best way to quickly raise enough money to pay for some or all of the upcoming Disney trip!  All current volunteers (both new and old) must turn in their Aramark Volunteer Forms to Heather before they can work any games.  The next event to work will be a Pitt game on  Saturday, September 30th, more details to follow.

Bands of America Regional at The Pro-Football Hall of Fame Stadium - September 16, 2017 
The MAHS Marching Band will be defending its 2016 AA title at the BOA Regional held at Canton, Ohio Pro-Football Hall of Fame Stadium.  (Yes, this is the same stadium where the Hall of Fame game is played, Arizona vs Dallas this year).
We will perform in the preliminary competition at 1:15pm. The finals performance will start at 6:45pm.  Students report at MASH at 6:45AM.  We will depart around 8AM on three motor coaches, arriving, warming-up, performance in the preliminary competition, and either watching the finals performance, or performing in the finals performance, which begins at 6:45pm.  A complete itinerary and information can be found on, Skyward, or your child, which was distributed on 9/5 after rehearsal.  This will be an extremely long day for all involved, please plan accordingly.
Parents wishing to purchase tickets may do so at the stadium.  There is a $10 charge to park, and traffic does become congested during the afternoon hours around the Hall of Fame and stadium areas.  Please plan enough time to view MAHS at 1:15PM.  Visit for further details.

Music Memorization Testing Schedule

The music memorization schedule was distributed after the Thursday, August 10 rehearsal.  Wind and Percussion students will be tested for memorization of music.  Selections are listed on the bottom right corner of the paper.  Each student will receive a grade for this test.  For additional information, please download the information page and schedule which can be found in the student document pages of  

Band Florida Performance Tour February 13 - February 19, 2018
The Marching Band and Symphonic Band will be traveling to Florida in February 2018 to perform in the Walt Disney World, Florida resort.  The band will depart on Tuesday, February 13, after school and depart Orlando on Sunday, February 18, returning to MAHS on February 19.  The band's preliminary performance day is Thursday, February 15 at the Magic Kingdom (time is unknown).  The Symphonic Band performance date is not confirmed at this time.   The cost of the trip is estimated at $975, this includes all transportation, hotel, tickets to 3 Disney Parks, and a duel admission to Universal Studios (Island of Adventure and Universal), as well as all meals while in Florida, (the only meals that are not covered are meals while en route to FL or PA).  There are numerous opportunities to fundraise a portion or all of this trip throughout the fall/winter.  Please take advantage of these fundraisers to offset the cost of this trip.

October 7 - SAT - Band is off that weekend
October 14 - PSAT - Band has a competition at Deer Lakes H.S. - Students will still be able to take the test and participate in all Marching Band activities.
October 28 - ACT - Band is off that weekend.

Private Instrumental Lessons

Private Instrumental lessons is a great way to excel on your instrument. Not only will you learn specific techniques on your instrument, from a teacher who is an expert on your instrument, but also it will open doors to new repertoire, solo, ensemble, etc. Private lessons will also provide confidence when performing in an ensemble or auditioning for any PMEA festival. Contact Mr. Barthen for a complete list of private instructors in the area.

The following positions are available for Job Shadow:

BAND UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of band uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments, coordinate shoe order (including guard), uniform cleaning (done by professional cleaners) coordinate the chaperoning of uniforms (including guard) before/after any event requiring a uniform (football games, competitions, parades, concerts, etc.). Coordinate Band, C/G & Orchestra Jacket orders.  Works as a team with Color Guard Uniform Coordinator and Formal Wear Coordinator.

COLOR GUARD/WINTER GUARD UNIFORM COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW: Responsible for all aspects of uniform care and fitting.  Will coordinate uniform fittings and alterations during summer months, record keeping, uniform assignments,  uniform cleaning (done at home).  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator and Flag Sewing Coordinator.

FORMAL WEAR COORDINATOR JOB SHADOW:  Responsible for fitting and placing order of formal wear order for Symphonic Band and Orchestra.  Coordinate alterations with sewing parents when appropriate.  Works as a team with Band Uniform Coordinator.

Under PA Law Act 153, The State of Pennsylvania is requiring all adults who volunteer in any capacity within the school to obtain background checks. This will include parents who volunteer to chaperone the MAHS Marching Band at football games, parades, band camps, and trips. Chaperones are required to complete the PA State Police Criminal Background Check, Child Abuse History, and FBI Fingerprints. The FBI Fingerprint is only if the volunteer has not been a state of PA resident for at least 10 years. Please visit for additional information.
