*AWAY BAND CAMP*
Oh what a week!  It was an unfortunate situation for many locals as they dealt with flood waters at the end of July.  W&J's Cameron Stadium and field house were no exception.  For the staff and chaperones, we were tasked with calculating a logistical puzzle (nightmare) that began to run smoothly after a few days.  Much patience, coordination, and the willingness to work as a team made the venue transition to Alexandre Stadium in the Ross Memorial Park seamless to our students.  We could not have been successful without the constant dedication of the staff and of the parent volunteers; those who stayed at camp, and those who took time out of their week to travel back and forth from home to the stadium.

Thank you to all parents who donated food and drink for camp.

Thank you for all the volunteers who assisted with the departure on Sunday.  Special thanks to Corinne Conte, Shea Corsetti, and Ginny Kotok for chaperoning the kids on the buses on the way to W&J.

Thank you to Joe Estermyer who secured the luggage truck, assisted in logistics at Alexandre and W&J, and returned the truck after a very long day.

Thank you to our onsite Paramedic, Ed Reynolds.  Ed was available 24 hours a day for our kids.  From medicinal needs to ice packs and ace bandages, Ed was on the spot.  I personally thank Ed for transporting his Keurig to camp.  Sometimes there's just not enough coffee.

Thank you to our Trailer Guys, Bob Stathers and Tom Pelkington.  Lots of excitement with the trucks, trailers, instruments, and pit - where do I begin?  In addition - fun fact - Bob and Tom moved literally a ton of water daily to the field, of which 910 pounds were gatorade.  This does not include hauling water daily to the campus for afternoon sectionals and evening activities.  These guys are amazing.

Thank you to our Chaperones who stayed on campus all week:  Amy Clark, Carla Cords, Aimee Platt, Laura Wall, and Andrea Ward.

Thank You to our Chaperones who arrived on-site daily or part-time:  Carla Collier, Becky Ellerbusch, Ginny Kotok, Tina Sinclair, Cindy Stathers, and Lynne VandenBosche.

Thank you to Grace Cap, Georganna Palmer, Gloria Rauch, Jared Tuk, Lynne VandenBosche, and Laura Wall for their excellent photography.  They snapped hundreds of pictures and posted them on the website for your viewing pleasure.  We hope you enjoyed seeing your students hard at work during the week.  We appreciated your patience as we worked through a technical issue at the beginning of the week.

Lastly, thank you to Joe Estermyer, Mickel Howell, Patrick Kennedy, Tom Pelkington, and Bob Stathers for assisting with stadium cleanup after Friday's storm, transporting trailers to W&J for the students' final performance, and transporting the trailers back to MAHS.

Kennywood Day
The Band will be performing at Kennywood on Wednesday, August 9.  The pink Itineraries were distributed to students/parents at check-out from Away Band Camp.  Student report time is 10AM.  SENIOR REPORT TIME IS 9AM for a quick in uniform picture.  We have reserved Pavilion #7 for the students to store their belonging for the day and as a shelter in case of rain.  The parade begins at 8pm.   The students will be responsible to purchase lunch and dinner while at the park.  Kennywood provides a free ride all day admission.

SCHEDULE ADDITION!!!  10th FOOTBALL GAME SCHEDULED -IMPORTANT!!!
The MAHS Marching Band will be performing at the August 25 HOME football game at 7PM vs. Ambridge H.S.  Originally this was a scrimmage game, which turned into the first regular season exhibition game.  The band will perform pre-game and halftime.  Students will report at 5:30pm.  Please make this change into your marching band schedule.

Band Florida Performance Tour February 13 - February 19, 2018
The Marching Band and Symphonic Band will be traveling to Florida in February 2018 to perform in the Walt Disney World, Florida resort.  The band will depart on Tuesday, February 13, after school and depart Orlando on Sunday, February 18, returning to MAHS on February 19.  The band's preliminary performance day is Thursday, February 15 at the Magic Kingdom (time is unknown).  The Symphonic Band performance date is not confirmed at this time.   The cost of the trip is estimated at $975, this includes all transportation, hotel, tickets to 3 Disney Parks, and a duel admission to Universal Studios (Island of Adventure and Universal), as well as all meals while in Florida, (the only meals that are not covered are meals while en route to FL or PA).  There are numerous opportunities to fundraise a portion or all of this trip throughout the fall/winter.  Please take advantage of these fundraisers to offset the cost of this trip.

Summer Marching Band Prep - PLEASE READ!!!
To aide in each student's success in the Summer Marching Band rehearsals, students must start a physical training regimen to endure the hot summer weather.  Students have been advised to get out of the house and become physically active.  This does not mean they need to run a mile with a 50-pound backpack, but this does mean they need to get out of the air-conditioned house, take a walk, play a pick-up game of wiffle ball, sport, swim, etc.  This will not only acclimate them to the heat and humidity, but also build their physical stamina to endure the weather conditions.  PLEASE, encourage your child to be active in the months leading up to the July/August rehearsals.
In addition, please begin to organize the items they will need.  A cross-trainer type of tennis shoe.  Sandals, slip on shoes, Converse Chuck Taylors, or a shoe that CANNOT be tied or lack a good arch are NOT appropriate shoe for marching band.   Also, we also encourage students to bring a 1 gallon water jug with their name located on the jug to be brought to every rehearsal.  Sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen for their lips is a great extremely important for these rehearsals as well.  Students should find a back-pack, drawstring bag to store all of this stuff to make it easier to organize their "field bag" for the marching band season.
Diet and hydration is also an important part of being successful in the summer months.  Student should prepare two days in advance in hydrating for marching band rehearsals.  Stay away from Pop and carbonated beverages.  Students are also reminded to eat a healthy meal before rehearsals.  Breakfast is important during Home Band Camp.
These little things will go a long way in order for everyone to have a successful summer marching band season.
